When your pet requires surgery, we know this can be a time of stress and concern for you and your pet. By choosing East Petaluma Animal Hospital, you can have confidence that your pet is receiving expert care from our staff of dedicated and compassionate medical professionals. We recommend pre-anesthetic blood testing prior to any surgical procedure to ensure your pets safety during anesthesia. We use the safest anesthetics available during surgery and design an individual anesthetic plan that is specific to your pets health needs. During surgical procedures, we support patients with intravenous fluids as well as continuously monitor your pets EKG’s, oxygenation (pulse oximetry), temperature, blood pressure and respirations.
Routine cleanings and dental checkups are vital to the health and longevity of your pet’s life. Routine cleanings work to prevent periodontal infections. Preventative measures that you can do at home such as weekly brushing, dental diets, OraVet™ prevention gel, rawhide chews, Greenies®, and other bones will help prevent the plaque and tartar buildup on the tooth surface. Veterinary dentistry is constantly progressing. Periodontal disease is the cause of about 75% of all dental problems. It is also the cause of 95 % of all bad breath cases. More than three quarters of cats and dogs have dental disease. Dental care is necessary to provide optimum health and optimize quality of life. Untreated diseases of the oral cavity are painful and can contribute local and systemic diseases. Plaque and tartar accumulation constantly grow and infect the mouth. These bacteria may enter the bloodstream through bleeding gums and cause such problems as heart valve infections (endocarditis) and kidney infections (nephritis).

Our pets mask many of their symptoms and in our busy lives we may not notice the subtle changes that can negatively affect our beloved friends. In routine exams, we are able to diagnose and prescribe appropriate treatment for your pets.
Vaccinations and preventative care
Vaccinations are an important preventative measure you can take to keeping your pet healthy. We recommend annual vaccinations for dogs and outdoor cats. Dogs who go to dog parks, groomers or, boarding facilities should be vaccinated for kennel cough with annual or biannual bordetella vaccines. Dogs who hike, hunt, and are exposed to the wilderness should be protected from Leptospirosis and Lyme disease as well as distemper. We offer recombinant vaccines for DHPP (distemper). Bordetella is usually an oral vaccine (no injection necessary). Lyme, Lepto and Rabies vaccines are non-adjuvanted vaccines administered to select animals with exposure to these infectious agents (usually ticks and open water sources, respectively). Cats that are in and outside daily should be vaccinated for Feline Leukemia, Distemper and Rabies annually with recombinant vaccines. Cats who are mainly indoor should be vaccinated for Distemper every 3 years. Please see our recommendations for monthly flea, heartworm and tick prevention.
We offer in-house diagnostic testing. During the exam of your pet we are able to perform heartworm tests, fecal testing, urinalysis testing, blood chemistry testing, digital radiographs, cytology of the skin and growths. Our in-house diagnostic services also include ultrasound exams and, endoscopic exams.
We offer boarding to cats, birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and small dogs. Our boarding animals stay in cages in our treatment room and are able to interact with the staff throughout the day.
